Count validity from the correct date
Immigration authorities may measure validity from arrival, planned travel or the end of the permitted stay. Do not rely on the month printed on the passport cover. Calculate the exact date for every country in the itinerary, including transit points where you clear immigration.
Why blank pages still matter
Electronic approvals do not eliminate physical entry and exit endorsements. A journey combining several countries can use more pages than expected, especially when there are land borders, return entries or separate visa stickers. Zambia’s three-full-page guidance is the strictest among the routes covered here and should drive planning for a multi-country passport.
Damaged and non-machine-readable passports
South Africa’s ETA warns that damaged, altered or non-machine-readable documents may be rejected. Similar practical risks apply elsewhere because scanners must read the machine-readable zone and photograph. Renew a passport with lifting laminate, water damage, missing pages or a photograph that no longer provides a reliable identity match.
Children need their own document checks
Kenya requires an eTA for each non-exempt child, and Tanzania requires separate visa applications for individual passport holders, including minors. A child’s shorter passport validity can disrupt a family application even when the adults’ documents are valid. Check consent and birth-document requirements separately from visa rules.
A simple audit before booking
Photograph the biodata page, count completely unused pages and record the expiry date in your trip file. Compare the result with every destination and any country where a connection requires immigration clearance. Renew before purchasing non-refundable flights when the passport is close to a threshold.
Questions travellers ask
Is six months always enough?
Not necessarily. South Africa’s ETA currently applies a longer validity requirement.
Do electronic visas use passport pages?
Entry and exit stamps may still require space.
Can a damaged passport be used?
It may be refused; renew a damaged or unreadable document.
