Direct answer: A yellow-fever certificate is a health-entry document, not a visa. Whether it is required depends on your route, transit history and age or medical exemptions. Uganda lists the certificate among East Africa Tourist Visa requirements, and South Africa may request it when travel begins in or passes through a yellow-fever-risk country. Carry the original certificate where applicable.

Route history matters more than the final destination

Health officers consider where you have travelled or transited, not only your passport nationality. A connection in a risk country may trigger a certificate requirement when the airport transit meets the destination’s threshold. Review the full flight path, including overnight connections and airport changes.

Visa approval and health clearance are separate

Receiving an eVisa, eTA or visa-on-arrival eligibility does not waive vaccination rules. Airline staff may check the certificate before boarding, and border health officials can request it after immigration approval. Store visa documents and health records together, but do not assume one replaces the other.

Zambia specifically distinguishes air arrivals from land and water arrivals, while Kenya’s eTA asks for arrival, departure and lodging evidence at application stage.

Medical exemptions require advance planning

Travellers who cannot receive a vaccine should obtain formal medical advice and the accepted exemption documentation before departure. Entry treatment varies by country, and an airline may not interpret a casual doctor’s note as sufficient. Confirm the format with the destination’s health authority or mission.

Keep a border-ready document pack

Carry originals where required, plus printed and offline digital copies of approvals, certificates, tickets and lodging confirmations. Protect passport scans with encryption rather than leaving them in an open photo gallery. Each traveller should be able to access their own essential documents if a phone or bag is separated.
