Serengeti National Park luxury camp

Northern Tanzania · 14,763 km²

Serengeti National Park

Named after the Maasai word siringet, meaning "endless plains," the Serengeti is Tanzania's oldest and most iconic national park. It is home to the most diverse concentration of plains wildlife on earth and forms the core of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

The park encompasses distinct zones — from the short-grass plains of the south (where calving occurs January to March) to the acacia woodlands of the central Seronera valley, the remote western corridor, and the Lamai wedge in the north, where the Mara River crossings draw visitors from around the world between July and October.

Ngorongoro Crater wildlife

Northern Tanzania · 260 km² caldera floor

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Formed three million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed in on itself, the Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact caldera — a 2,000-metre-deep natural enclosure sheltering approximately 25,000 large mammals on its floor. It is one of the few places in Tanzania where you can reliably sight all of the Big Five, including the endangered black rhino, in a single day.

Above the crater rim, the highlands are inhabited by Maasai pastoralists whose cattle graze alongside zebra and wildebeest. Our exclusive early-morning access allows guests to descend before the crowds, with private picnics arranged on the crater floor.

Zanzibar is the ideal complement to a Tanzania safari — a spice island of extraordinary beauty just a 25-minute flight from the mainland. The main island of Unguja, together with Pemba and the smaller islets, offers some of the Indian Ocean's finest beaches, dive sites, and cultural experiences.

Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers narrow labyrinthine streets scented with cloves and cardamom. The north and northeast coasts — particularly Nungwi, Kendwa, and Matemwe — are home to the finest beach properties, from intimate boutique hideaways to ultra-luxurious villa estates with private butler service.

Mount Kilimanjaro summit climb Tanzania

Northern Tanzania · 5,895 m asl

Mount Kilimanjaro

Africa's highest peak and the world's tallest free-standing mountain rises majestically from the Tanzanian savannah to 5,895 metres above sea level. Kilimanjaro is a volcanic massif with three distinct summits — Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira — traversing five distinct vegetation zones from montane rainforest to arctic ice fields.

Our premium Lemosho route — the most scenic and the most likely to result in a successful summit — is operated on a fully private basis with luxury mountain huts, dedicated altitude doctors, and gourmet bush catering. Typically taken over 8–9 days for optimal acclimatisation.

Ruaha National Park exclusive safari

Southern Tanzania · 22,000 km²

Ruaha National Park

Tanzania's largest national park is one of Africa's best-kept secrets. Vast, wild, and extraordinarily beautiful, Ruaha occupies a remote plateau bisected by the Great Ruaha River, where massive baobab trees punctuate a landscape that feels unchanged since the dawn of time. With fewer than three luxury camps operating within its borders, Ruaha delivers the exclusivity that the Serengeti can no longer offer.

The park supports Africa's largest elephant populations — herds of 200 animals are not uncommon — as well as seven species of raptor, wild dogs, sable antelope, kudu, and all of the Big Five.

Tarangire National Park elephants and baobabs

Northern Tanzania · 2,850 km²

Tarangire National Park

Named after the Tarangire River — a permanent water source that acts as a magnet for wildlife throughout the dry season — this underrated gem of Tanzania's Northern Circuit is home to the country's largest elephant population and some of the most magnificent ancient baobab trees on the continent.

From June to October, when surrounding waterholes dry up, over 3,000 elephants converge along the river alongside wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, and lion. Our private concession to the north of the park offers exclusive walking safaris and night game drives unavailable within the national park itself.

Essential Information

Planning Your Tanzania Trip

✈️ Getting to Tanzania

Tanzania is served by two international gateways: Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) near Arusha. KIA is most convenient for Northern Circuit safaris. Major airlines serving Tanzania include Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Emirates, KLM, and Qatar Airways. Domestic light aircraft transfers between parks are arranged by The Luxury Africa DMC.

🛂 Visas & Entry

Most nationalities require a visa for Tanzania, obtainable online in advance via evisa.immigration.go.tz. Visa on arrival is available at major entry points. East African Tourist Visa covers Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. Your Luxury Africa DMC specialist will advise on the exact requirements for your nationality and itinerary.

💉 Health & Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from endemic countries
  • Malaria prophylaxis strongly recommended for all mainland Tanzania
  • Routine vaccinations: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus
  • Travel insurance with emergency evacuation cover is essential
  • Consult your GP or travel clinic at least 6 weeks before departure

💰 Currency & Payments

The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency. US Dollars are widely accepted at lodges, camps, and for tips. Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. ATMs are available in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Stone Town. Your safari and lodge costs are typically settled prior to arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

The dry seasons of June–October and January–February are considered peak season for wildlife viewing, when vegetation thins and animals concentrate around water sources. The Great Migration river crossings typically peak between July and October in the northern Serengeti. That said, Tanzania is a superb year-round destination with distinct advantages in each season.

Luxury safari prices start from around $850 per person per day at premium lodges, rising to $1,850+ per night at ultra-exclusive high-end camps. Prices vary significantly by season, destination, group size, and the specific properties chosen. Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tanzania. An e-Visa can be obtained online prior to arrival. Citizens of certain East African Community member states may enter visa-free. Your Luxury Africa DMC specialist will advise on the specific requirements for your passport.

Tanzania is an outstanding family safari destination. Many lodges offer dedicated family suites and children's programs. The Northern Circuit — particularly Serengeti and Tarangire — is ideal for families, combining spectacular wildlife with child-friendly accommodation. We recommend private vehicles for families to allow a flexible pace and departure times.

Absolutely. Neutral-coloured lightweight clothing (khaki, olive, beige) is recommended — avoid white and bright colours. Layers are essential as mornings can be cold and afternoons warm. Good binoculars, sunscreen, and insect repellent are essential. Weight restrictions on light aircraft transfers (typically 15 kg in soft-sided bags) apply on bush flights.
