Why Cross-Border

The Mara and the Serengeti are one living system

The Great Migration does not respect borders. Every year, 1.5 million wildebeest move north from Tanzania's Serengeti into Kenya's Masai Mara — and back again. A cross-border safari follows that logic: the Mara for July–October river crossings and Amboseli for Kilimanjaro backdrops, then south to Serengeti plains and the Ngorongoro Crater for the Tanzania chapter.

Below are every Kenya & Tanzania combined safari package we currently operate, plus our best Kenya-only and Tanzania-only itineraries that work well as a cross-border pairing. Planning Essentials

Read these before you book

The four topics that most affect your routing decision and overall safari quality across Kenya and Tanzania.

When To Travel

The East Africa year

Both Kenya and Tanzania work year-round. Match your priority — migration crossings, calving, or value season — to the right month and the right park zone.

Jan–Mar
Calving Season

Southern Serengeti Predators

Wildebeest calving in S. Serengeti draws massive predator action. Kenya is warm and dry — excellent Amboseli and Mara big cat viewing.

Apr–May
Long Rains

Green Season Value

Both countries at their quietest and most affordable. Dramatic skies and lush landscapes — some camps close, but the experience is uniquely beautiful.

Jun–Oct
Peak Dry Season

Migration & Crossings

The most sought-after season — Mara River crossings in Kenya (Jul–Oct), Serengeti big cats, clear skies. Peak demand and highest rates.

Nov–Dec
Short Rains

Shoulder Season Gems

Brief afternoon showers for a few weeks. Otherwise excellent — lower rates, fewer vehicles, green landscapes, and festive December openings.

Honest Answers

Kenya & Tanzania FAQ

The questions our planners are asked most before booking a cross-border safari.

Should I do Kenya, Tanzania, or both?

For first-time Africa travellers, either country is enough for a strong trip. Tanzania offers the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and the best concentration of luxury camps. Kenya offers the Masai Mara, Amboseli, private conservancies with off-road driving and walks, and the magic of Giraffe Manor. A combined safari makes excellent sense if you have 10 days or more — the two countries are naturally complementary, sharing the same ecosystem and the Great Migration.

What is the best time for a Kenya and Tanzania combined safari?

July to October is the peak season for Mara River crossings in Kenya and coincides with excellent Serengeti big-cat action in Tanzania. January to March is ideal for calving season in the southern Serengeti with good Kenya conditions. Both countries are accessible year-round — the key is matching your priority (crossings vs calving vs shoulder-season value) to the right routing. We match your camp placements to your travel month.

How many days do I need for a Kenya and Tanzania safari?

A minimum of 8–9 days covers both countries meaningfully: 3–4 nights in Kenya and 4–5 nights in Tanzania. For a relaxed pace with Giraffe Manor, private conservancies, or a Zanzibar beach finish, 12–14 days is the sweet spot. Our most-booked cross-border itinerary is 11 days — it balances both countries well without rushing, and allows proper Serengeti time (3 nights) alongside 3–4 Mara nights.

Do I need a different visa for Kenya and Tanzania?

Yes — Kenya and Tanzania are separate countries with separate entry requirements. Most nationalities can apply for a Kenya e-Visa online (USD 51 single entry) and a Tanzania e-Visa (USD 50). The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda (not Tanzania). We provide full pre-departure visa guidance for all our clients — no guesswork. Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from endemic countries.

How do we cross the border between Kenya and Tanzania?

Cross-border logistics depend on your routing. From the Masai Mara, most travellers fly to the northern Serengeti (Kogatende) or to Arusha. From Amboseli, you can drive to the Namanga border post into Tanzania and continue to Arusha or Tarangire — a half-day road transfer. We coordinate all border paperwork, vehicle logistics, and meet-and-greet services at both ends so the transition is invisible to you.

What is the best route for the Great Migration across both countries?

July to October is the classic crossing window — the herds move north from Tanzania into Kenya for the Mara River crossings. Our 11 Days Great Migration (Northern Serengeti First) route positions you in the northern Serengeti before the Mara, catching both the buildup and the dramatic crossings. Our 14 Days Ultimate Great Migration route follows the herds more deeply through the Mara Triangle and then all the way south through the Serengeti zones.

Can I include Giraffe Manor in a cross-border itinerary?

Yes — Giraffe Manor is a natural first or last chapter for Nairobi-based cross-border journeys. We partner with The Safari Collection for exclusive access to Giraffe Manor and all Safari Collection properties. Because Giraffe Manor rooms are limited, we strongly recommend booking 9–12 months in advance. Our planners hold allocation — message us early and we'll check availability alongside your full Kenya–Tanzania route.

How much does a Kenya and Tanzania safari cost?

Group joining cross-border safaris typically run USD 300–600 per person per day. Mid-range private safaris run USD 650–1,000 per day. Luxury safaris run USD 1,100–1,900 per day across both countries. Ultra-luxury safaris with Singita, Giraffe Manor, and private conservancy camps run USD 2,000–4,500+ per day. The biggest cost drivers are camp selection, internal flights, season, and whether you use private conservancies in Kenya.
