Choose the balance before choosing hotels

A safari and Zanzibar holiday combines two different rhythms. The safari usually involves early starts, activities and transfers; the coast offers a chance to slow down. Decide whether you want the beach to be a brief ending or a substantial part of the trip before allocating nights.

Avoid spreading a limited holiday across too many safari bases and a short beach stop. Count the usable days rather than only the nights: a flight and road transfer can occupy much of the transition day. It may be more satisfying to remove a stop than to arrive at the beach already thinking about the airport.

Where the beach fits in the route

Many travellers prefer the coast at the end, but flight schedules and personal preferences should guide the order. Review the last safari camp, the departure airstrip and the connection to Zanzibar as one continuous journey. Do not assume that any bush flight connects conveniently with any beach hotel on the same afternoon.

Our published East Africa beach-extension routes include Kenya as well as Tanzania before Zanzibar. If you want a Tanzania-only holiday, ask us to adapt a Tanzania safari and quote the beach nights separately. That distinction matters for routing, travel documents and the amount of time spent crossing between countries.

Keep the island days flexible

Choose accommodation for the experience you want: time at the hotel, interest in cultural outings, access to water activities or simply a quiet end to the holiday. Confirm the meal plan and any excursion costs before booking. A beach extension is not automatically all-inclusive because the safari portion includes meals.

Leave optional boat trips and other sea activities responsive to local conditions. You do not need to fill every free day to make the extension worthwhile. At the end, allow a comfortable road transfer and check-in window for your departing flight rather than treating the final morning as a full day of sightseeing.
